Volcanic Terroirs – Wines with Minerality Masterclass

Hungary is truly the land of diverse soils: beyond sedimentary rocks, limestone, red limestone or marl, it is also the land of fire. Beyond Tokaj’s astonishing volcanic diversity, minerality remains a defining feature across many of our wine regions.

Originally an architect and engineer, Robert Gilvesy was born and raised in Canada, but has deep Hungarian roots thanks to his grandparents who emigrated from Hungary. He established his winery in 2012 on Szent György-hegy, a 4-million-year-old eroded volcano in the Badacsony appellation. Thanks to the influence of John Szabó, Robert realised the importance of volcanic soils in producing some of the finest and most unique wines in the world. Today, his main goal is to express the special character of the Szent György-hegy terroir through his wines. Robert grows organic grapes on 15 hectares to produce low intervention wines.

Master Sommelier John Szabo was the first Canadian to add the “MS” after his name in 2004. Reporting on the wine world for a quarter-century, he’s a founding and principal critic for WineAlign.com, Canada’s most widely read wine publication. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Volcanic Wines: Salt Grit and Power and co-founder of Volcanic Wines International, which runs an annual conference and Wine Awards competition. John has travelled to virtually every wine producing country on earth and has also produced wine in Eger, Hungary between 2004-2017.
